World Food Day: Creating a bountiful harvest in the desert

Taya Walit Mazou is reaping twice the benefit from her harvest this year. The family eats the peanuts they cultivate, while the green leaves and leftovers from the plant are used to feed the animals. “I was surprised how big our harvest was,” she says. “I was proud to be able to share it with others.”

In and around Mberra refugee camp, Mauritania, 5,000 people like Taya – refugees and members of the local population – have managed to cultivate 31 hectares in the harsh, hot desert and grow fruit and vegetables. CLWR’s partners at Lutheran World Federation-Mauritania have spearheaded this important farming and irrigation training project.

Canadian Lutherans have a long-term partnership with the people living in Mberra: you’ve supported at least one We Care humanitarian shipment of kits and quilts a year to this region for several years now!

It’s just what they needed: Gifts from the Heart catalogues are now available!

Our new Gifts from the Heart catalogue is arriving in mailboxes across Canada this week. We hope you’ll once again take the opportunity to give a gift that’s really needed this Christmas and for other special occasions throughout the year.

You’ll notice we’ve presented a larger format this year. This gave us room to share personal stories of how your gifts make a difference in the lives of people around the world – please check them out! CLWR is responding to the Syrian refugee crisis

Thank you for your generous donations and prayers as we continue to help Syrian refugees. You have also (happily) overwhelmed us with your requests to begin sponsoring refugees to come to Canada.

Please be patient with our refugee program team as they work to return all of your messages; they will get back to each of you as soon as possible.

For those looking for more information or tools to raise awareness of the crisis: we have compiled photos, fact sheets, worship resources and information sessions related to the Canadian Lutheran response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

At the link below, please find:

  • information on CLWR’s current and past programs in support of Syrian refugees
  • ways you can help, including donating to aid efforts

(donations will be matched by the Canadian government until December 31) and refugee sponsorship

  • resources you can use with your congregation at a worship service, fundraiser or another awareness raising event
  • information sessions & events (in Vancouver, Toronto, St. Catharines, Winnipeg) CLWR is holding that relate to the Syrian refugee response

Reminder: CLWR Sunday worship resources are now available!

CLWR Sunday is an opportunity for congregations to celebrate your partnership with CLWR in international humanitarian work. Please hold your service whenever it best suits your congregation.

Beaverbrae Reunions 2015

The Beaverbrae reunions were a great success. It was fascinating to hear stories from people who came on this ship to Canada following the Second World War, and to explore CLWR’s relationship to their journeys. CLWR was in its infancy when these trips were made!

Please click here

to watch the video created for the event, read some passenger memories and view some media coverage of the reunions.

Your We Care donations support people affected by Ebola

Our We Care shipment has arrived in Liberia to support people affected by the Ebola outbreak – here’s one photo of quilt and blanket distributions we received from Lutheran Development Service-Liberia late last month. The basic living supplies included in the shipment – quilts, hygiene supplies, school supplies for students and teachers – will help people who’ve lost family members to Ebola or are recovering from the virus themselves. Thank you for your support.
