Praying A-Z!

During the ABC District’s Week of Prayer (Jan. 18-25, 2015), the members of Concordia Lutheran Church (Edmonton) wrote 26 prayers … a prayer for each letter of the alphabet. The majority of the prayers focused on various aspects of the ministry and mission (e.g. “Z” is Zest for the Mission; “P” is for Prayers for Peace for God’s People;” “Q” is Quiet Time for Reflection on God’s Word”) of the ABC District, but some of the prayers were written for ABC District office staff. Each District staff worker received their own personal prayer (usually with a Bible passage written out as well) composed by a member at Concordia. The 26 prayers were shared with the District office staff and they were read during staff devotions. What a wonderful, uplifting gift! “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18)

Has the CEF Situation Affected the Gathering?
DYG Update
The youth gathering committee has been asked if we still intend to have a District Youth Gathering in light of the CEF crisis…and the answer is YES! We believe that district youth ministry should persevere, and while our DYG finances may be affected, we’re still making plans to provide a valuable time of worship, fellowship, and learning, even if we’re unable to draw on our CEF account.
However, in order to provide a financially sustainable youth gathering, we must have 120 people registered by May 7, 2015, or we may not be able to provide a gathering with a balanced budget. If you/your youth group find value in youth gatherings and want to be in Langley in July, please register!
We’ve also been asked what youth groups should do if their fundraising efforts have been affected by the CEF troubles, either because their fundraising account is held by CEF, or because congregation members who would usually support youth fundraising aren’t able to access their CEF funds. We strongly believe that God will provide and we suggest looking outside of the church community in your fundraising efforts. If you need ideas and support, please don’t hesitate to contact the gathering committee to discuss the situation.
See you in July!

Structuring your congregation according to the “Parish Church Model” or as “Missional Communities”
This might be a future direction that is worth exploring by your congregation. Are you unfamiliar with the “parish church model” and “missional communities?” Are you wondering how to replant your church in a rented facility like a school, a movie theatre or community hall? If you want to explore these options for your congregation, please contact me (Dr. Glenn Schaeffer) at gschaeffer@lccabc.ca or 780-474-0063. Let’s talk!

Introverts Make Great Witnesses for Jesus!
Introverts and evangelism seem to be an oxymoron and yet research reveals that introverts are gifted witnesses. Are you an introvert who desires to share the Gospel in your social context? If so, Dr. Glenn Schaeffer offers a 1 1/2- 2 hour workshop that will equip you as Christ’s witnesses. If this witness workshop does not interest you, but you are desiring to equip God’s people to be Jesus’ witnesses in some other way, contact Dr. Glenn Schaeffer (gschaeffer@lccabc.ca or 780-474-0063) and a workshop can be tailored to your congregational needs.

Passion for truth can sometimes come across as passion for being right. People are more likely to leave the church or never come at all if they are experiencing confrontation instead of conversation with Christians. As people pour out their hearts … Continue reading →…»

Prepare For Worship – (Mar. 1)
THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
- Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16
- Romans 5:1-11
- Mark 8:27-38
By the Cross of Our Lord Jesus, We Inherit Life Everlasting with God
In His covenant with Abraham, the Lord promised to be with him, to bless him and to make him “the father of a multitude of nations.” It is “an everlasting covenant” in Christ Jesus, the seed of Abraham who is blameless before God Almighty. All who believe in this Lord Jesus are the offspring of Abraham and are blessed “throughout their generations” (Gen. 17:1-7), because the Christ has suffered many things. He was rejected and killed, and after three days He rose again (Mark 8:31). To comprehend this theology of the cross, we must set our minds “on the things of God,” and not “on the things of man” (Mark 8:33). “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). Therefore, having been “reconciled to God by the death of his Son,” much more “shall we be saved by his life” (Rom. 5:10). Baptized into His cross and resurrection, “we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” and by faith we rejoice in the hope of His glory (Rom. 5:1-2).
