CHURCH SEASON: Epiphany

Church Extension Fund
By now, most people have heard about the current hardship in Church Extension Fund.  Please note that ABC District Investments Ltd. which handles RRSPs, TFSAs etc. is separately incorporated and remains stable.  Meetings will be held this week throughout our District with investors to further explain the situation and to provide options for moving forward.  (see schedule below)  Meanwhile, we need to be single-minded in prayer, asking God to guide us through this situation and that He would protect His Church so that the old evil foe will not use the current hardship to undermine in any way the message of the Gospel which we are called to proclaim.
As always, we welcome your questions, comments, and feedback! news@lccabc.ca.
Please feel free to use any of this information in bulletins, newsletters,
calendars, or announcements.

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
  • 1 Samuel 3:1-10 (11-20)
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
  • John 1:43-51

The Lord God Is with You and Reveals Himself to You by the Preaching of His Word
The Lord Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael to “come and see” that He is “the Son of God” and “the King of Israel” (John 1:43-49). And they shall see even “greater things than these” (John 1:50). For His body is the temple of God on earth, and by His priestly sacrifice the heavens will be opened to all who believe and are baptized into Him. Therefore, He calls Philip and Nathanael, first to hear His Word and then to speak as apostles, even as He once called Samuel and established him “as a prophet of the Lord” (1 Sam. 3:20). As the Lord was with Samuel “and let none of his words fall to the ground” (1 Sam. 3:19), He also accompanies and upholds the preachers of His Word in our day. Thus, by the Gospel that is preached to you, “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you” (1 Cor. 6:19). Since your body thus belongs to the Body of Christ, is meant “for the Lord” and shall be raised up like Him, now “glorify God in your body” (1 Cor. 6:13-20).

Prayers

Please pray for all of those affected by the current hardship that is being experienced by CEF.  Also, that God would grant safe travel to all who will be travelling to the Investors’ meetings.

Pray for our ABC District and for Lutheran Church-Canada, that the work we do together as congregations, schools and church workers will in no way be hindered by our CEF situation.

Church Extension Fund Meetings
These meetings will be held to discuss the options we have outlined in the letter, the considerations of each option, overview on timelines and potential rates of return. The intention will be to determine people’s preferences for which option we explore. These preferences will be registered through a voting system, the details of which will be explained at the meeting.  This vote is not binding, but will be critical in helping the District focus its analysis in a cost-effective way on one of the options.

Once we have this feedback, we will come back to you with a more detailed exploration and explanation of the preferred option.  If, however, on closer examination, it turns out that there is now insufficient support for the once-preferred option, the fact that this was not a formal vote means that neither option has been closed off.

Are you currently serving in a team ministry setting? Team ministry brings many wonderful rewards and challenges. Join together with other ministry teams for “Leading Well from the First Chair or Second Chair,” a seminar to help strengthen and encourage those serving others with others.

“Leading Well from the First Chair or the Second Chair” will be presented and facilitated by a two pastors in team ministry the last 20 years at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Mark Zehnder, Senior Pastor, and Dr. Roger Theimer, Executive Pastor, will share what they have learned about leading well from either the first chair or the second chair. Participants will help select the topics by April 1st by taking a 3 minute survey. Rate potential 20 topics according to your interest. The top 10 topics will be presented. Each topic includes a 20 minute teaching by one or both of the presenters followed by group discussion. Then each team meets for 15 minutes to discuss their takeaways.

Mark your calendars now to join us in Calgary, right before the ABC District Convention. The seminar will begin May 21 at 1:00 pm and conclude May 22 at noon. Costs will be minimal (hotel accommodations and some meals). Registration will begin in the new year. For more information, please contact Deloyce Weist: deloyce.weist@bethelchurch.com. “Come to Him Who Answers Prayer.”

Baptism and prayer go hand-in-hand.  When we are baptised our Father adopts us into His family granting us all the benefits of being a child in His family. In response, as His daughters and sons, we talk with Him in prayer.  Starting January 18th, your Christian brothers and sisters, throughout the ABC District, will be talking with our Father as we begin the ABC District Week of Prayer – eight days of intensive praying. Have you scheduled some time to talk with your Father during that time?
If you are looking for some personal or congregational prayer resources, you are encouraged to visit:  PRAY! or our new Prayer Resources.
