The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Collect

Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life that we may boldly confess Him to be the Christ and steadfastly walk in the way that leads to life eternal; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

  • Isaiah 51:1-6
  • Romans 11:33-12:8
  • Matthew 16:13-20

The Lord Jesus Christ Is the Son of the Living God

Jesus asked His disciples: “But who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15). The question is also put to us: Who do you say that He is? Flesh and blood do not reveal this to us, but by the ministry of the Gospel the Father in heaven reveals His Son to us on earth, who has become flesh and suffered death for our salvation. Thus we believe and confess that He is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt 16:16). As He died for our transgressions and was raised for our justification, He looses us from all our sins and preserves our life within His Church, against which even “the gates of hell shall not prevail” (Matt. 16:18-19). His salvation is forever, and His righteousness “will never be dismayed” (Is. 51:6). He comforts us with the Gospel in His Church, so that “joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song” (Is. 51:3). Therefore, “according to the measure of faith that God has assigned” (Rom. 12:3), we also offer ourselves “as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God” (Rom. 12:1) through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

“Come to Him Who Answers Prayer.”

Pray with Boldness and Confidence!  Martin Luther makes this point when he writes, “God invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear Father.” You are encouraged to approach your Father with boldness and confidence at all times, but especially during the ABC District Week of Prayer which is January 18-25, 2015. Numerous prayer resources, like Bible studies, sermon series ideas, prayer worship services, links to prayer resources,  “how to” manuals for prayer walks and prayer vigils are available online at:  PRAY!

Planting Trees in the name of Jesus!

Jesus’s followers at Concordia Lutheran Church in Edmonton are planning to plant 200 trees in a local park during Servolution, working in partnership with Parks Edmonton and a local girl guides group.  What acts of service is your congregation planning for Servolution?  We believe we can begin a “Servolution” of love by serving people through acts of kindness. You are invited to participate in this movement inspired by love of Jesus and empowered the power of the Spirit of God.  “Servolution” is coming to the congregations of the Alberta and British Columbia District from September 20-28. For more information and for resources like Bible studies, “how to” guides, servant event ideas, and event materials, visit:  ABC Servolution.

Have You Ever Considered a Church Work Vocation?

Is God calling you to serve as a Pastor, a Lutheran Teacher or a Director of Parish Services (DPS)?  Or do you know of someone who should consider a vocation as a full-time church-worker?  We want to challenge you and assist you as you work through these questions and, to that end, have launched a new website.  The address is:

www.IsGodCallingMe.ca

Included in the website are testimonials from Pastors, Teachers, Directors of Parish Services, a Pastor’s wife, and seminary students.  Read how they were challenged by God to serve in a full-time called position as a church worker.  Listen to their challenges, the encouragement that was provided to them, the obstacles they met and their joys in serving. This week, we  feature  Rev. Paul Roggow, ABC District Missionary for the Metropolitan Vancouver area.
